The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program challenges students to step outside their comfort zones through physical activities, skills development, adventurous journeys, and community service. By setting and achieving personal goals, participants develop leadership, resilience, and teamwork, gaining lifelong skills and international recognition.

This program is a globally recognised youth development initiative that encourages students to engage in a range of activities designed to promote personal growth and skill development. Open to students aged 14 to 24, the program is structured around four key components:

  1. Physical: Participants choose a physical activity, such as sports, dance, or fitness, that challenges them to improve their physical well-being and commitment. This encourages students to stay active and develop healthy habits.
  2. Skills: In this component, students select a skill to learn or improve upon, whether it be a musical instrument, art, cooking, or coding. This fosters creativity, discipline, and a sense of accomplishment as they work towards mastering their chosen skill.
  3. Volunteering: Community service is a vital aspect of the DofE program. Participants engage in meaningful volunteer work that benefits their local community, helping them develop empathy, social responsibility, and a greater understanding of societal issues.
  4. Adventurous Journey: This element involves planning and undertaking a journey or expedition in a wilderness or unfamiliar environment. Students learn essential skills such as navigation, teamwork, and problem-solving while building confidence and resilience through outdoor adventures.

To achieve the award, students must commit to each component over a specified period, demonstrating perseverance and dedication. The DofE program not only enhances personal skills but also provides participants with a sense of achievement and a valuable addition to their CVs or college applications.

At St Mary and St Mina’s Coptic Orthodox College, we are proud to support our students in their participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. This program encourages students to step beyond their comfort zones, develop resilience, and grow in independence.

Through a balance of service, skill development, physical activity, and outdoor experiences, students are guided to build confidence, responsibility, and a strong sense of purpose. These experiences complement our commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are prepared to contribute positively to their community.
