Coptic Heritage

Coptic Heritage and History
Grounded in Faith. Flourishing Across Continents.
The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria stands as one of the world’s oldest Christian traditions - a vibrant, faith-filled community founded by St Mark the Apostle in the heart of Egypt around 42 AD. Today, it spans the globe, nurturing over 20 million believers with a deep commitment to spiritual formation, service and education.
At its helm is the Patriarch of Alexandria, Pope of the Holy See of St Mark - a spiritual leader who continues the apostolic legacy of guiding the Church with wisdom, humility and devotion.
In Australia, the Coptic Orthodox Church is a growing and dynamic presence. With more than 50 parishes, two monasteries, two theological colleges and five independent schools, the Church offers families a rich tapestry of worship, learning and community life. Each institution reflects the Church’s enduring values: faith in action, excellence in education and a profound respect for the dignity of every person.
As a member of the National Council of Churches in Australia, the Coptic Orthodox Church is both deeply rooted in its ancient heritage and actively engaged in the broader Christian landscape, offering families a faith tradition that is both timeless and relevant.
